Frequently Asked Questions
I am a first time horse buyer. What should I expect if I come out to look at a horse for sale at your facility?
We have sold many horses to first time horse buyers. If you find a horse with us you wish to try first thing to do is call us and tell us about yourself and your skill level. We are very honest to our clients about whether we think a horse will be suitable to your needs. After speaking with you to determine if we have anything to suit your skill set we will setup an appointment for you to come in to try the horse. When you come to our facility we will have you sign a Release of Liability to ride horses on our property. After this we will get out the horse for you and you can observe it being saddled and ridden in the arena, after this should you still think the horse is a possible fit you will be able to ride the horse under the supervision of one of our trainers. If you are looking at one of our sale horses with less than 60 days on it we do not allow clients to ride the horse.
Deposits to Haul a Horse to San Diego or Tombstone; How does it work?
If you want to look at a horse located at one of our facilities but want it hauled to our other facility to do so we require a non refundable deposit. For example, should we have a horse located at our Tombstone, AZ location but you are closer to our San Diego, CA location we can haul the horse to our San Diego location for you to try. In order to do this you must pay a non refundable deposit of $300 dollars. This deposit helps us determine that you are a serious buyer before we take on the risk and costs associated with hauling a horse across state lines. Once the horse is transported to San Diego, you would have one week upon notice of arrival to come try the horse you placed a deposit on. The deposit guarantees your first right to see the horse before any other buyers and decide to purchase. Should you decide to purchase the horse the deposit will go towards the purchase price of the horse. Should you choose to pass on the horse your deposit would be forfeit. Please be aware of the risks that come with hauling a horse for long distances, sometimes horses can develop respiratory infections from the hauling due to shipping complications as well as change in climate, temperature and stress.
Should I do a Pre Purchase Examination (PPE)?
We recommend that all Buyers do a PPE for their own peace of mind. Some Buyers do elect to pass on a PPE for many reasons. One of these reasons are that the cost of the PPE is not worth paying on a lower budget horse. Another reason is that the Buyer is a seasoned horseman and feels comfortable verifying and inspecting the Horse on their own. We are happy to provide a list of local veterinarians that will come to our Facility to conduct a PPE. All PPE's are conducted at the Buyer's Expense.
I want to purchase one of the horses you have available. How does this process work?
Simple, if you want to purchase a horse from us, download the above bill of sale, review and sign and then let us know how you would like to process payment. We accept Cash, Cashiers Check, Venmo, Zelle, Wire Transfer or Credit/Debit with 3% service fee. We will not hold a horse for a Buyer pending vet check when we have another Buyer with cash in hand that is ready to purchase prior to the scheduled vet check. We apologize for any inconvenience but we have had too many Buyers cancel their vet check after we hold a horse for weeks waiting for their appointment. If a Buyer has paid for a PPE we will allow 24 hours for the Buyer to make a decision after the PPE results before showing the Horse to another party.
I need delivery options for the horse I want to purchase. Can you help with shipping arrangements?
We work with multiple shippers and can recommend a few for long distance trips. We do offer local shipping options as well. Typically these rate start at a minimum $150 per trip and go up based upon mileage.
What if I can't get a stall at the facility I want to move my Horse too upon purchase. Do you offer boarding for a limited time after purchase?
We do offer stalls by the day until you can make shipping and stall arrangements at your facility for your purchased Horse. Our rates are $20 per day for box stalls with shavings and full board and $15 per day for outdoor stalls with full board.
Why aren't prices listed on the horses on your website?
We list our horses with a price range explained below. There are many reasons why we do not display the price of each horse on their listing. One is that some buyers feel this information should be private. Another is that if a horse is in training often times their price will increase as their training increases.
$ = $4,500 - 6,500
$$ = $6,500 - $ 10,500
$$$ = $10,500 - $15,000
$$$$ = $15,500 +
Do you Offer Trials?
We do not offer trials generally for horses priced under 15,000.00. In some circumstances if the situation is local within 45 miles of our facilities we will allow a 10 day trial if the client has a trainer and a reputable barn. We also require a non refundable $1000.00 deposit credited toward the purchase price of the horse. This deposit would be forfeit if the client chooses to return the horse at the end of the trial period. This deposit ensures that the client is a serious buyer. We also require a mortality/loss of use insurance policy for the full purchase price amount of the horse with Winne Livestock listed as the loss payee. Client is responsible for transport costs both ways and Winne Livestock must approve the hauler.
Where do you get your horses?
We raise many of our own horses and most of our young stock are horses that we have bred, raised and/ or purchased and put into our breeding programs. In additional to this we also are constantly purchasing new livestock to go into our various lease programs with dude ranches, summer camps, lesson programs and trail guiding outfits. We have buyers in many different states that are always sourcing quality stock for us. We are very transparent with our clients about what our listed horses are suitable for and what their history is. We do not list any horse that we have not had health checked and completed our minimum 30 day temperament testing. Bear in mind that most of our horses listed are horses that we have had for years and utilized in our various programs.
I don't see what I am looking for in your available horses. Can you source a horse for me?
